With only one week left in the regular season, Grand Forks Red River soccer coach Luke Glasoe isn’t focused on the postseason. Instead, Glasoe’s point of emphasis is getting his team moving in the right direction.

Red River battled West Fargo Tuesday night in a game that had major postseason implications. The Roughriders fell to the Packers 1-0 in a game of two of the top teams in the Eastern Dakota Conference.

West Fargo maintained the top position in the EDC as the Packers improved to 8-3-1 while Red River, now sitting in fourth, dropped to 6-4-2. The Riders need to finish fourth or better to reach the state tournament.

“I think we, for sure, underperformed,” Glasoe said. “Giving up only one goal to West Fargo, that’s a good accomplishment, but this will be three games in a row that we haven’t scored a goal. We need to be better on the offensive side of things.”

Red River had multiple chances to tie the game, even down to the final seconds, but couldn’t get the equalizer.

Glasoe said it’s important for the Riders to get a win as the season is in the stretch run. The Riders will play Fargo North on Thursday and Fargo Shanley the following Tuesday to close out their season. The Red River coach said that a win in one or both of those games is critical in order to build momentum.

“We need to get a win. At this point, we don’t need to be (thinking) about the implications of state; we need to be a better soccer team.”

Red River has won one of its past five games, with the lone victory coming against their cross-town rival Grand Forks Central.

Tuesday’s bright spot for the Roughriders was goalkeeper Matthew Scribner.

The senior had 12 saves, including multiple diving stops down the stretch to keep his team in the game.

“I thought (Scribner) played outstanding,” Glasoe said. “He made some great saves. A quick restart on a free kick that caught us off guard was the only mistake that we really had.”

West Fargo junior Teklezegi Berhe scored the game’s only goal, coming at the 16th minute on a free kick.
